Do you struggle with overcommitment? Learn how overcommiting affects our quiet time, our families and our relationship with God.
Podcast Transcript:
Hi, friend. I’m Brigette Henry. Today’s podcast episode is going to be a little different. I’m taking a break from my content schedule and we’ll pick up with silence and solitude again next week.
Intro
But for this week, I just want to share a quick word about overcommitment. Over the weekend, I released The Quiet Time Guide. I am so excited to get that guide into your hands to help you craft an intentional and effective quiet time.
But I have to say, last week was a little chaotic for me. As most of you know, we just moved and I was so excited to get The Quiet Time Guide out to you that I didn’t want to wait until after we had settled into our house to release it. In retrospect, that could have worked. But I’m not great at spreading big projects out. I tend to wait until the last minute to complete them, which is exactly what I did with The Quiet Time Guide. Last week, I pushed myself too hard to get the guide out to you on time. And I ignored my family and, ironically, my quiet time in the process.
Overcommitment
So today, I wanted to address overcommitment. Because overcommitment came up a lot while I was writing The Quiet Time Guide. And that makes sense, because for some reason, we think we have to say yes to every Bible study, reading plan and women’s event that crosses our paths. It’s no wonder we don’t have peaceful, life-giving quiet times. We keep overloading them with all of this extra stuff. We invite so much “Jesus stuff” into our quiet time we forget to invite Jesus!
Redeeming Your Time
I’ve been listening to Redeeming Your Time by Jordan Rayner, and so far it’s been an amazing book. One of the things he talks about in the book is God’s will. He says that if God asks us to do something and we do it, then great, He doesn’t need to ask anyone else. But we will leave things unaccomplished. And when we do, God will either have someone else pick up the pieces or He’ll take care of it Himself. And that means, God doesn’t need us to overcommit to make things happen. We don’t have to push through three Bible studies at a time and attend a conference every weekend. His Will will be done with or without us. I hope that takes some of the pressure off of you overachievers.
Something’s Gotta Give
Another thing I want to share with you is this phrase I repeat to myself when I am overcommitted: Something’s gotta give. If we’re overcommitted, we can choose what to let go of or our body or circumstances will choose for us. You can’t give yourself more energy than you’re capable of having. And you can’t add more time to your day. We have limitations, so if we overcommit, our work will get sloppy, we’ll forget things, and our families will bear the brunt of our negligence.
That’s why this week’s podcast episode is different. I wanted to do something short to share this word about overcommitment. But I can’t do more, because something’s gotta give.
Next Week
Next week I’m going to talk about silence and solitude, and I am so excited to do that! But I knew I wouldn’t be able to do it justice this week. So today, I just wanted to encourage you to look at your life, and your quiet time, and consider how you might be overcommitting. What is something that you could give up? Something that isn’t the highest priority. That isn’t something that absolutely has to happen. Where can you say “no” to yourself, so you can say “yes” to the things God has given you to do?
I’m praying that God gives you clarity and helps you to drop the commitments that aren’t of the utmost importance. We don’t form well spiritually when we’re over committed. And when we’re overwhelmed, we need to take a break and rest. So this week I’m going to take a break and rest. And I hope that if that’s what you need, you will join me!
Giveaway
A quick reminder, if you’re listening to this on April 30th, this is the LAST DAY to sign up for the Quiet Time Giveaway bundle. One of the prizes in that bundle is The Quiet Time Guide that I just released. It’s an ebook that guides you towards crafting an intentional and effective quiet time. And let me tell you, I was convicted myself when I wrote it. I learned so much about how I spend my time with God as I pulled everything together for this guide. I also realized how much I need something like The Quiet Time Guide for myself. I need something that reminds me not to overcommit and to find flow and rhythm that works for me. Everyone is unique, so our quiet times won’t all look the same!
So if you’re interested in that guide, go sign up for the giveaway before you pull out your credit card to buy it. I’ll announce the winner of the giveaway through email and in the Facebook Group on May 1st. You can join that Facebook Group through the link in the show notes.
And if you’re listening to this after April 30th and you’re interested in the Quiet Time Guide, you can go to brigettehenry.com/the-quiet-time-guide or follow the link in the show notes to purchase it.
Outro
I’ll be planning more content for the future over the next few weeks. If you haven’t taken the Find Your Focus quiz on my website, would you mind doing that real quick? I’m using the results to decide what content I want to focus on next. You can find the link in the show notes or go to brigettehenry.com/find-your-focus-quiz
Next week I’ll be back to talk about silence and solitude. I’ll see you then as we continue this spiritual formation journey together.
